I looked at both of my intact M37s, neither of which is very good, and at the M43, which is pretty good, though the motor has been replaced with a civilian one at some point, and none of them has a spring. The M43 has a castle nut, but strangely, like the one I just pulled the engine from, the left side bolt faces up and the right side bolt faces down. Any reason for that? I looked at the Tucker Sno-Cat, but it has a different bell housing, with the two mounting bolts screwing into each side of it from the sides.

You're probably right about the thrown rod busting a hole in the cylinder. It clattered and quit once, but out of desperation I re-started it to try to drive it back, and after running a few seconds it clattered some more and locked up. This engine never ran well, and always had extremely low compression, varying a lot between cylinders, and burned a lot of oil, possibly related to it having no oil filter on it, and an air cleaner that looks like it came off a lawn mower. This summer the coolant has been going down in the radiator, without any visible leaks, but I thought maybe it was a leaky head gasket or a leak that was too slow to notice (it's parked on dirt).

Hopefully the donor engine will be good. I don't have an easy way to test it, but I'll pull the head and pan and take a look inside. I need to swap a lot of parts from the old to the new anyway, so I've already committed to an overhaul gasket set. If I can't wiggle the pistons and rods around by hand and there are no shavings in it, I'll assume it's okay. Not sure if I should try to freshen up the valves the old-fashioned way with the suction cup stick while I'm in there or leave well enough alone if they look fair to middling.
