If I were you, I would do a Google search on varnish for marine use. Anything suitable for the wood on a marine vessel should be suitable for your bed wood. That said, you will find nothing in a varnish that will survive under loading with firewood, gravel, or other abrasive materials. Varnish is a hard finish, but not bullet proof.
