My power has been out for three days so excuse my late response.
OK lets see here, you say I missed that the two diff. carriers are facing each other and that the ring gears are opposed or on opposite sides of the carrier from each other, correct? Meaning that since the drive shaft is rotating towards the drivers side on both the output to the front and rear axle, that both axles are rotating in the forward direction, correct ?
No, I did not miss that. What I missed is (as I said)the fact that while the rear ring and pinion are turning and mesh with the designed optimum gear contact for power transfer and strenght, the front ring & pinion gears are not.Driving in reverse would be the opposite.
I had not known this before the original post got me to thinking. I have since took two carriers and faced them opposing as would be the case were they installed and rotated them in the same direction and confirmed this fact. I had assumed (hoping)that both sets would have optimum gear mesh when in forward motion. When you have adequite spares and have never needed to replace or change much it tends to get foggy over time. I now understand how the old men felt at my frustration when they would say they had worked on the old stuff but could not remember specifics and I just couldn't understand how they just forgot.
