The first thing I would be looking for is a vacume leak. My 73 W-100 would not idle when I first bought it and it turned out to be a cracked PCV hose. Replaced the hose, adjusted the idle mixture and it idles like a new truck. It could also be a bad intake manifold gasket. The 318's are known to be a problem if the manifold is not torqued correctly. Start with the easy part and remove and inspect and replace each hose one at a time. I have even had older vehicles (with very high mileage) leak vacume around the throttle shaft. Good luck
