...so that the pulleys would fit their appropriate balancers. The change was made circa 1971-72. The difference in the balancers is where the timing marks are, as the chain cover had the timing pointer on the passenger side and then later on the drivers side.

This steel crank balancer is much thicker, though, which is why the pulleys are off front to rear. Filing the hole is easy, but this does nothing for the belt misalignment.
