The 273 had a forged steel crank, and the early 318's (1967) used the same crank. It was quickly phased out for a cast iron crank. Most of the books don't even mention the early 318 had a steel crank.

Will the 318 Poly crank swap with a 318LA crank? I haven't seen any mention of that.

Also, none of my manuals state whether the 318LA is internally or externally balanced. If internally balanced, then a hub swap should make little difference. If externally balanced, it may or may not make a difference, depending on how the offset weight is set up.

I suppose if worse comes to worse, I could machine shims to go behind the waterpump pulley and on the brackets to provide the correct spacing. A pain in the rear, but I do have a milling machine.
