You don't need a expert. All you have to do is buy a Operators manual!!( and read it!)
My Manual (1953) states the tranny is syncro'ed in 3rd & 4th gear only, just like the later NP420 ( M-37B1 ). I have had both trannys ( 1954 & 1958 ) and they shifted the same, I have also used the same pto on both. Now there is info I have recieved that the first run of M-37's ( 1951 ) had a Crashbox tranny, these were probably the same run of 37's that also had 6v Factory gauges ( w/resister) these were on the first 3400 trucks off the assembly line. I'm sure all of these vehicles were upgraded while still in Military service so I doubt anyone would run across one of these Crashbox equipt 37's today ( though I think Bill Lammers has one of these trannies laying in his shop ). So I guess you could say there was a early tranny ( syncro'ed ) and a early, early limited run tranny ( non syncro'ed ). As far as seeing so many 1953 M-37's, 1952 & 53 were the highest production years of early M-37's. My "expert" References come from TM9-1840C,(Production History ) TM 9-8030,(Operator Manual ) TM 9-2520-232-35 ( Transmission,NP # 420 ), TB 9-2320-212-20/1 ( Basic Difference between transmissions on M-37 series trucks )
