and in the later years(M37 w/ 5.83 gears)there's a thrust 'shoe' that rides against the back of the ring gear. It would adjust from the outside of the housing-look for a stud w/ locknut near the pinion brg area. Your descr1ption sounds like it's the end of the adjustable stud.If it is, wheres the shoe?- it's about 1 1/2 in long by 1 in wide w/ a 3/8 whole half way thru it.This trust shoe would be the first part to get baked if you ran out of gear oil (since its the fastest moving part, in feet per revolution)
