Chunk In My Rear End

When I disassembleD the rearend I found a small piece in the bottom. It's about 3/8 inch long and 1/4 inch in diameter the one end is flat and the other looks like it was cut off with side cutters. The back of the housing where the ring gear spins there's marks in the inside of the housing. I haven't completly cleaned up the carrier but the ring gear and everything else looks good so far. My question is does this warrant tearing the carrier apart or can I put it back in the housing and not worry about it?
