The first two part rims that where made where called "split-rims" for obvious reasons. These early designs tended to seperate and in the process destroy anyone and anything in their path. This type rim was discontenued after a decade or so of mayhem and replaced by the current version which is called a "lock ring" rim. You will notice a horizontal flange that projects inwards that is under the bead of the tire when it is mounted. The presure of the bead pressing down is what keeps the ring from moving up out of its grove. A 16.5 tire will be a perfect fit on a 16" rim because the sealing lip projects inward about 1/4" so the tire will center perfectly. Unfortunatly this sealing lip is very flexable (it has to be to seal) and one wonders how long it will be before it relaxes its pressure on the lock ring flange allowing it to fly off. There are people running 16.5" hummer tires on dodge rims so obviously you can get away with it for a period of time, but for HOW long is the question! Anyone who is thinking about doing this should first go to a truck stop and look at their tire inflation cage to se the amount of damage these rings cause when they fly off during inflation.
