I'd suggest finding a rebuild manual for the engine. It should give you the initial cold settings.

Then, when it is hot, readjust to proper hot settings.

Now, what I'm going to tell you is controversial. Some people say don't do this. Others say it is valid. All I know is that I've done it for years w/o a problem on several engines.

Once properly adjusted hot, let the engine completely cool off w/o driving it around. Then measure your cold settings and record them. From that point on, I would just use the cold settings to adjust the rockers, with a hot setting recheck perhaps every six months. Keep in mind that the season *may* have an effect on the settings, depending on your locat1on. Doing this on a cold engine in winter will give different clearances than in summer. That's why I would do a winter and a summer hot adjustment and record the values when the end was cold. This may be the reason some folks object to cold adjustments.

I resorted to this method because of cramped quarters and burned hands and a frequent need to adjust valves on one engine due to an insanely high lift long duration cam (like every Saturday).
