The idler gear in the NP205 spins on two opposed tapered roller bearings, similar to the setup used on wheels bearings.

One end of the idler gear mounting axle has a tapered interference fit in the case wall; the other end of the axle is threaded, and the threading protrudes through the case wall, large flat washer, self-locking nut.

The manual calls out an endplay mesurement, .000-.002 @ 150 ft./lbs.

Fellas, at 50 those bearings are so tight the idler gear won't move.

Tightening down that lock nut just enough so that flatwasher won't rotate feels good, both endplay and gear rotation, torque value unknown.

Something ain't right...or is it?

Eddie
