It sounds like you want to have a starter with a solenoid that will engage the gear automatically with the turn of the key. But if you didn't mind keeping the starter pedal, you could keep your original 6-volt starter. It will handle 12 volts just fine, but will turn faster, from what I have been told by some experienced PW owners. You just want to make sure you don't sit there and crank and crank and crank for extended periods, as this could overheat the starter more easily now that it's running off 12 volts.
