2011 Potomac Highlands Tour (October 14-16)
Canaan Valley Stae Park and Resort
Everyone welcome! Mostly secondary roads, some forest service roads with mild stream crossings passable by any SUV or light truck. Usually plenty of space to jump in the back of someone's truck at the trailheads.
Friday:
Depart from my place in Morgantown around 1:00pm. Plenty of space to park your trailer and tow vehicle. We will arrive at Canaan Valley State Park around 4:00pm. Trail ride on Canyon Rim Road (8 miles). Dinner and Bluegrass Music at the Purple Fiddle in Thomas.
Saturday:
Depart Canaan Valley around 10:00am for Bear Rocks in Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. Beautiful views. Short hike. Picnic lunch. Afternoon road trip to Smoke Hole Caverns for an underground tour. Return to Canaan Valley around 4:00pm. Dinner at the Golden Anchor.
Sunday:
10:00am trail ride on Canaan Loop Road (13 miles). Lunch at Blackwater Falls Lodge. Return to Morgantown by 4:00pm.
Both Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley have a lodge, cabins, and campsites. We rented several cabins at Canaan Valley. Let me know in advance if you need a room.
