Gary, shifting without the clutch is a skill that everyone that owns a stick car or truck needs to know how to do. my father taught me how when I was 15 years old,he drove the trucks of WW2 without any syncros at all. he taught me how to double clutch at the same time. it has came in very handy at times in my life. broke my left leg in 1973 in a bike accident, my car at the time was a 69 440 GTX 4 spd, real trick with a full lenth cast on!! I got very good at it over the 15 mo.s I was crippled up. the 420 in my 58 FF shifts fine without the clutch, as most will, it's just a matter of learning how! good luck, Dave.
