I did a carb rebuild a while back. Two things come to my mind:

1) The carb kit often has the incorrect rod length for the PW carb. Simple to fix. Use the rod from your carb with the new piston.

2) The carb kit most likely has the wrong jets. The carbs with the built in governor found in the ffPWs uses larger jets and different metering rods. The kits are usually for the generic car/light truck versions of the carbs.

After I rebuilt my carb it really did not run as well as before I rebuilt it. It was always running lean. If I pulled the choke out a little it would run much better. I pulled the carb apart and measured the rod and used numbered drills to determine the jet sizes. They were not the same size as the originals. Lucky I have this habit of keeping parts. I put the original ones back in (there was no wear on the originals except for the needle valve) and the truck runs great now. I did keep the new needle valve and it's seat as the reason for rebuilding the carb was that it was flooding badly as the needle valve was not shutting off the flow of gas.
