"A fool and his money are soon parted." You could substitute "money" with "tools". Personally, I don't borrow tools unless I know the owner very well and am prepared to replace it. The problem with replacing these days is you aren't likely to find the same quality, especially if it is an older tool.
It sounds as if most of these experiences have not involved TRUE friends. JH
