you can place a pickup in your trans adapter that reads the ring gear teeth - SW and others can do this .
There is a mechanical drive that cummins makes that comes off the front of the timing case cover - ugly and takes up room .
Alternator tachs are quite common way to go
Some have cut some notches in the front balancer and adapted a dodge sending unit .
I went the ring gear route.
