Carb flooding not very likely unless the tank is pressurized, or you have an electric pump left on.
Pump diaphragms do go bad, and leak into the oil, though there is usually an external weep hole that ought to drip first. Check there with it running.
Or maybe your problem went \away, the gas smell is just the left overs from the previous drain. - don't bet on it.
I have heard of mechanics that would sell an overhaul, based on the assumption that running the engine with such tin 'oil' caused irreparable damage. BS.
