You were sways from the epicenter. You felt both the S and P waves of the quake. The separate with distance from the quake as the S and P waves travel at different speeds. If your close you often do not feel the up and down followed by the side ti side. I have felt both as you did. I was sitting in my office chair in SF and it felt like a huge fist in the butt followed by the building going side ti side.
