IMO, having a battery charger mask a leak would be more worrisome to me as you don't know you have a leak until you are offshore away from shore power. if a battery charger were to be employed, i would want a bilge alarm and cycle counter to make me aware of how often the bilge pump was cycling. my boat is a 1980 groverbuilt. it gets hauled each winter since i have owned it, but the orig owner left it in the water only hauling it for zinc replacement and bottom painting. he never ran a batt charger and never had a water issue. just run the motor and charge the batteries. most leaks that could cause sinking would overwhelm any battery operated / electrically charged bilge pump. most big boats have 110v bilge pumps in addition to 12v to handle dockside pumping. its all a matter of comfort and what you worry more about.
