I didn't truly heal until 1988, when I went to the Wall to say goodbye to some buddies from my unit...it's an experience that every Vietnam Era Vet needs to have. It put to rest a lot of the ghosts and guilt* and I'm sure it would help the Vet you encountered.
*Many have survival guilt when they lose people from their unit.
