If you are trying to get quicker starts with the 6V system, check your battery cables. I recently switched from #2 battery wire to 2/0 (#00) welding wire and the difference in quick starts is very noticeable at cold and especially hot, where the truck would crank sllloooowwwww. I too contemplated an 8V battery to solve my particular problem but this change did the trick for me.
