If you have an electromechanical voltage regulator, I would tweak it to make sure it's giving the 8 volt battery a full charge. Somewhere around 9.3-9.4 volts would be good. Adjust it by bending the tab that the spring attaches to on the frame of the voltage coil. The voltage coil is the one wound with fine wire and that vibrates constantly while the engine is running and the battery is charged. Everything else should be fine.
