I'm thinking about it. The problem is this is the middle of the season and they're running two trolleys full time every day. Down time is very expensive. Nobody has a distributor in local warehouse stock, so it's several days to get one, just like from Rock Auto. You're right that slant 6 distributors are cheap. This improperly-assembled distributor is just the latest thing to make me disgusted with the quality of the alleged "engine rebuild" that was done on the trolley by a local mechanic shortly before I got involved.

I took the whole thing apart last night and put om of the washers at the top end of the shaft to hold the advance assembly further up away from the housing (the reluctor was actually cutting its way through a rivet in the plate -- how can a mechanic not notice that?) and will try to look down in the engine and measure with a steel rule how far down the gear should be on the shaft. The bearings are tight, and some oil got the centrifugal advance freed up, so if I can position the gear right I should have it running this morning. A new roll pin tightened up the reluctor attachment, and a new o-ring finished the "rebuilt". If I can't get it right, but it runs anyway, even if no better than before with the worn gear and the timing jumping around, at least that will get them by until I can get a properly rebuilt one shipped in.
