but I don't think mine is set up right. I have about .080" of slop in the shaft the way it is, and that's with 4 washers between the gear and the housing. The pin in the old gear goes through the only hole in that gear, which makes me think that whoever changed it last just used the hole that came in the gear instead of drilling their own in the right place. My gear is worn out mostly on the side next to the housing, which also makes me think it's sticking down too far into the block.

If I put the new gear on by drilling a hole closer to the teeth than the stock hole is, that would take up the end play, but I wonder if that's even right because when I move the shaft all the way in (down in the block), the top of the reluctor is slightly below the top of the pole of the pickup coil, but I'm thinking it should be more centered around it. Should some of those thrust washers be installed at the top end, next to the reluctor, rather than at the bottom. Is there a measurement for where the gear teeth should really be relative to the bottom of the distributor housing? I'm afraid if I put the new gear on just like the old one was (using the stock hole, 4 thrust washers at the bottom end, and .080 end play in the shaft, the timing will still keep bouncing around and the new gear will get worn out fast. It would be nice to have some definite numbers for how to set it up properly. Any chance you have distributor laying around you could take a look at for me?
