Good advice, retarded the timing and now thinking I might have a solid engine.
On my agenda for this winter, when I pull the engine, is getting a good look at the pulley and finding and re-engraving the line. I've scrapped up my knuckles plenty scrubbing the rust and crud on the pulley and can see several faint lines or just scratches that may or may not be the timing mark.
So I have no idea how I have it timed, but I twisted the distributor that way and got rid of the nasty knocking.
