Check your rubber lines before swapping the pump. My 74 Dodge truck had this same problem. Turned out to be a cracked rubber line. The carb would evap out but it took the pump for ever to pull from the tank to the carb. Eventually got to where I ahd to dump gas in the carb to start. Then it got to where that didnt work as the cracks were worse and sucking more air then gas.
