Are you sure it didn't just get into two gears at once? I'm not sure exactly what happens with the innards but sometimes when the tower or other things are worn out, you can get two pairs of gears engaged at the same time, which will lock it up good. Before you do anything drastic, pop the top off and see what's going on in there.
