Actually, the 308's aren't that bad at all. The only heads I ever used that were "better" were the X heads and early J heads on 340's and early 360's. The difference in performance with no other mods? About 10 HP. Noticeable, but not THAT much... and a good set of either will set you back more than it would cost to port/polish/large valve the 308's you have. The late casting non-Magnum heads are a viable option if you can get them cheap and don't need any freshening.
My advice- run the 308's. If you aren't happy with them, then look around for a set of late (89-92) heads casually... then refresh them and put them on later. Every E58 I've ever had was just fine the way it was for what it was.
