The real story is the 2.8 Liberty was planned for 5,000 units in two years. They sold 11,000 and ran out of engines. Also Congress changed the diesel fuel laws and passed more stringent emission laws for diesels that the 2.8 could not meet.
The Grand Cherokee had that terrible Mercedes 3.0 that was a dog and had terrible fuel economy and it too could not meet emissions. No body wanted it, it was a step backwards.
The new 3.0 from Chrysler/Fiat meets EPA, gets incredible fuel economy (34 mpg) and has as much torque as a Hemi.
In 2016 the CAFE must average 29 mpg for trucks, they can only meet that requirement with diesel or matchbox cars.
