There was a time that people didn't 'order' stencils. When I got started in this 31 years ago, the group I was with made their own stencils using brass master stencil sets to outline paper ones to go shoot with paint. We also made our own stars using a compass, ruler, and kraft paper. I still have a set of 2 inch stencils, but if I need another set, there are different things I could use including home depot stencils, mailbox or door number sets, or just hand cut them. There is no doubt that Rick Larson makes a good product, but since nearly every vehicle owner now makes use of his stuff, you don't see the hand variations in the vehicle markings that are readily seen on WWII vehicles in original photographs.

It is a small aspect of WWII vehicle restoration, and the ready-made stencils are sure convenient, but I think you miss out on something when you don't make your own markings.
