I always thought that the best way to set a house up was to use solar to power the lights. Don't need much of an array or large batteries for that.
LP appliances and wood heat-- by the pellet or the cord-- round up the easiest way to keep utility bills to a minimum. Hot water by wood when it's cold (when you need more, anyway) and solar when it's warm. All in the name of cheap living after retirement.
I just couldn't figure out how to set up the shop, other than running a generator when needed. Maybe an LP generator is worth looking into...
