Today's lesson: The purpose served by the oblong hole in the floor pan underneath the seat.

I never really knew what purpose this hole served, other than to let water in the cab during deep stream crossings. I thought it might be an inspection hole, but it has no cover.

Today I changed the hand brake band on Wendel (1954, C1-PW). This is essential after some idiot has driven the truck with the hand brake adjusted too tight causing the brake band to smoke like crazy. Don't ask me how I learned that lesson!

I have changed the bands before, but never while the transfer case was still in the truck. The oblong hole allows removal of the hand brake adjuster bolt (the long bolt with the hook on one end). You simply remove the lower nut and lock nut, and then push the bolt up into the cab to gain enough clearance to remove the springs and the band assembly. The rectangular cut-out in the rear of the floor provides the clearance for the band assembly. Pretty slick design!

Now if I can just get some help bleeding the service brakes. Hint, hint, Keith.
