Yes, the revised radiator, cowl and mounting for the 251 engine made the flat bar design necessary. The problem with the flat bar design is that they tend to bend and/or break under heavy use. I have several that are bent or broken and then rewelded with added reinforcing material. The flat bar type is much weaker than the angle bar design. I think the flat bar design could be improved with a little work.
