both my boat and command car run 12v alternators. they charge at over 14 volts. one is a one wire and one is a more traditional prestolite with a tach signal output as the engine is diesel. i ran all new wiring in both and show 14+volts at the gauges so i do not believe that is the issue. if you have a poor ground, it can cause all types of problems that would include increased resistance and heat. it may be your new gauges cannot tolerate the resistance created by bad grounds. my freshly painted truck had some ground issues that were remedied by exposing paint as required to get a good ground. david sherman is the recognized expert here, so hopefully will confirm or refute my statement above.
