With the temperatures we get here in parts of Oz, it's common on older engines to find the pipe from the pump to the carb wrapped with heat proof lagging (same as used on steam pipes) to solve the vapor lock problem. I've also seen the pump lagged the same way during summer. The pipe on my truck was lagged when I got it and I can't think of any reason to unwrap it. Glad the tour is going well and you've found a temporary solution.
