Last night, I lost a very dear family friend. He taught me ALOT about body work, especially painting. Art was a friend from my childhood, who owns a local body shop. Both my brother and myself got started in the work from him, taking us on as kids to sand and wash, and do other things around his shop. They were some of the best days of my childhood. As a youngster, I had a red wagon that I pulled around (what kid didn't) and it was all rusty and dented. Art took it from me one day, and said come pick it up in a week. This was before we worked in his shop. When I walked by the shop to see Art, he gave me the wagon, which looked like new. My brother and I were both amazed, and gratefull. Years later we would work with him part time helping out. After I found out of his passing this morning, I just could not get motivated to even go into my shop. And then I remembered something. My son has a friend who lives across the street, and he brought me his bike last week, asking if I could paint it. I told him the next time I was spraying something, I would throw it in the mix. So, I got motivated and put some of the best paint money can buy on it. He is a good kid and will take care of it, I know. As for Art Borget, and Borget's Auto Body, I think all businesses should be run like his. Art never changed his ways as he got older, and he passed some of his tools on to me when he would get replacements. I still use them and most likely will for the rest of my days. I showed him the most recent project, and he was thrilled that I was doing things the way he showed me a long time ago. I think what thrilled him the most was that somehow, he managed to keep alot of us kids out of trouble over time by keeping us occupied with something tangible. Who knows, maybe all the "bikes" in town will show up here....I hope they do....I cried when I wrote this.
