Thanks. I had wondered about the law against putting a vehicle into neutral while going downhill. It always seemed so easy to just put an automatic or synchro'd trans back into gear. But, now I think about the old trucks with non-synchro transmissions that were in use when the laws were enacted, it makes sense.
Plus, if the engine died while coasting you could lose power steering and power brakes. So, I guess there's several good reasons not to coast.
