The term Multi-piece wheel can cover more than one type wheel.
Split ring with solid wheel
Solid ring with solid wheel
Solid ring with split wheel( I think this is where the term "split rim" originated)
Three piece rim with solid bead seat, solid wheel and split ring.(by far safest)
Bolt together rims
I would think a tire shop would want the actual type to decide where or not to work with it. If you said "multi-piece rim" and walked in with a old true split rim they will more than likely tell you to keep waking,
