You can definitely try out the pump with a drill and appropriate hex rod. (several places sell the priming tools).

Make sure that you are spinning the drill the right way. I think that the Big Blocks go counter-clockwise (check this, though - I'm not certain).

I do this with all of my rebuilds before I start them the first time.

You can also prime while rotating the crank slowly to see if you lose pressure on a certain position (when the holes in the crank line up with passages in the block)indicating bearing clearance problems.
