Liberty's used the same VM engine in the US for 05&6. At the time of development VM was 1/2 Detroit diesel & 1/2 Penske. Penski's team did all of the calibration work...smart group of guys. It was a challenge to keep the long term emissions within the Feds requirements. The 5 states that think the world should revolve around rice burners wouldn't allow it to be sold at all. I lost a lot of skin replacing EGR valves on these..no fun at all. But other than the problems with the early EGR valves the engines themselves proved to be very durable with very low warranty costs. They always started with no problems in typical Michigan weather unless they sat unused for several weeks. I loved how they drove but always felt that the fuel economy should have been better than what it was(Avg. 25MPG).
