Jim is what we who push 18-wheelers for a living call a "Hot-Shot". He's an independent owner-operator with a single small truck and trailer. He does not enjoy the discounts for fuel, tires, and services that we big trucks get as part of a larger fleet operation. He's completely on his own in a niche market and constantly prospecting for a profitable load so he can pay his bills and feed his family and, oh yeah, his taxes. On my end of the business it is not uncommon for another company to come in to one of our customers and offer to haul their freight for less than we do. Some customers go that way. They're soon back with us. Available trucks and trailers and drivers. On time pickup and delivery of an intact load. Service is the key and is not there for the customer when the operator can't cover his total operating expenses with the rate being charged. Ya get what you pay for or you pay for what you get.
