the guy who sold me my command car owned a true value hardware store. he recommended and i used true value brand floor paint. it was a close match to the correct color for a ww2 dodge grey and has stayed on everything except the exhaust manifold in the really hot parts. my engine was a govt rebuilt painted metallic silver, which i believe to be incorrect. i wiped it down with some sort of degreaser and brush applied paint without primer. you can spend money on ford grey engine paint, which a lot of ww2 dodge use, but it will flake off like whatever canned stuff you can buy. on a related note, my lehman diesel is painted regal red, which is a standard rustoleum color. whether brushed or sprayed on after cleaning with brake cleaner, it sticks very well. you might try rustoleum as it is pretty forgiving. i find it to stick better unprimed as their primer never really hardens.
