I usually put brushed-on rustoleum red oxide primer on any iron that I don't intend to properly paint any time soon. I don't bother with the "rust converter" because all that rust will need to get removed (not just "converted") eventually anyway. Automotive primer is no good for this, though, because it's too porous and the metal will rust through it. The rustoleum red primer usually holds up for many years even in full sun, but it's better if it's top-coated with something. Regular rustoleum paint without a primer is good for temporary protection too. I usually use whatever odd colors I have sitting around, usually because I got it on closeout somewhere for cheap. A good hosing off, followed by drying in the sun, will ensure you're not trapping salt or mud under the temporary paint. My feeling is that the important thing is to get SOMETHING on there soon, though I've always lived in rainy places where it might be more important than where you are.
