First thing sounds like coolant sludge, you don't say if you are using an inhibitor/additive, some of these will break loose old deposits in the engine that can float on the surface. Warm it up to operating temperature and overfill the radiator to get rid of the gunk and keep an eye on it to see if it comes back. Check water pump to see if it has a grease cap or grease nipple on it, if so it may be some water pump grease breaking down. If it's not a grease-able pump, check for excess play in the pump shaft by loosening the fan belt and wobbling the fan - it could be contamination from grease if the pump bearing is starting to break down, if so next you will see some water leakage from the drain hole in the bottom of the pump. As to whether it's a hump head, you need to look at the very front of the head where it meets the block - non-hump are straight across, hump type have a bump about 1.25" long x about .25" in that section
