My brother has a supposedly rebuilt 318 that he traded for. The rear stud for the exhaust manifold on the passenger side was broken off and long story short we had to pull the head and will either replace or have a helicoil installed. Anyway with the head removed the pistons appear very loose in the bores and I could see quite a bit of the top ring. I don't have a lot of experience with regard to engine rebuilding but I have a 48 jeep that the pistons seem to have a similiar fit. It has a fair amount of piston noise and has never ran very well. Does anyone know if I can judge the condition of this engine without tearing it down any more than it is? I have heard trying to measure piston to bore clearance with a feeler gauge is not an acceptable method but will it at least give me a good idea? Thanks.
