Places that see a lot of snow and ice use salt because it lowers the temperature of freezing point of H20 to something less than 32 degrees F. This helps to keep the water on the roadways in liquid form. Of course, this only works down to a certain temperature, then the government breaks out the heavy duty stuff, which is even worse.

I hate the use of all this sort of stuff.
