I am also farily new to PW's but am well founded in 30 years of Antique Boat restorations. I own 10 restored Antique Chris Crafts. PW's and these boats share a lot in common. You can buy a fully restored boat from a known restorer and be safe in knowing exactly what and how the restoration was done. You can buy from a individual and always wonder, was 3M 5200 used between the hull planking, was the engine really rebuilt or cleaned and painted, etc, etc. Or you can do the restoration your self and know it was done correctly. You can start with a Gray boat (pattern boat) or a rusted PW and go from there or you can buy a boat or PW in GOOD non restored condition and have less to do. The price you can pay determines how work has to be done. Pay little bucks and expect a lot of work, making patterns and cutting new wood or metal. Pay more and have a better foundation to start the restoration.

The starting point depends on what you can afford. A word of caution for future PW buyers, relating to old wood boats. Fifteen years ago people were selling chris craft and hacker boats for $500.00 sometimes you would get 2 for that price. I have the old magazine articles proving this all the time. Now days you can expect to pay up to 20 grand and more for a boat that needs restoration. This explosion in boats is going to happen in PW's in the future, the prices are going to sky rocket.

Last thought..in antique boating many people are making a nice side business selling parts a repo parts. The hobby is not large enough for everyone to make Engine ID Plates, so only one does that. Another makes Motor Mounts, others cast bronze hardware...get it.
something for everyone...This could and should happen for PW's.

PW's and PW parts are going to skyrocket in prices unless small suppliers come on line to provide the parts we all need.
