Jaime,

As I mentioned before, I installed power steering in my M880. This conversion is no different than what you would do to a civilian dodge. No modifications where necessary, it was a straight bolt on. I got a power steering gear box off of a `77 1/2 ton dodge and a pump from a `75 in the local wreaking yard. Everything I needed for the job ran me all total roughly $125.00 (I also later replaced the input shaft seal and high pressure line to stop leaks, which I highly recommend if you get something out of a salvage yard. The seal kit ran about $10, the hose was about$10-$15(?))
The Dana 60 front axle is used on a 1 ton dodge. The M880's are 3/4 ton truck (civilian designation,) although the nomencature says it is rated as a 1 1/4 ton capacity truck. I think the Army's designator is more correct. Anyway, they run a lighter Dana 44 axle in the front. The 44 has these two narrowly spaced ball bearing in the front hub that some say are prone to failure. I've never had a problem with them. This is not a full floating axle. The Dana 60 is a bigger tougher full floating axle, with tapered bearings that are allegedly easier to service. Plus you could put in locking hubs on a 60 if you ever decided to convert your truck to part time four wheel drive. Personally, I'd never do that. I've heard of people who had done so and reported that they saw little or no improvements in fuel economy. I would still vote for putting a dana 60 in the front just for the fact it's a stronger, heavier duty axle that can take more abuse and carry heavier loads. Less likely to snap an axle too when off road.
